A guide for team leads adopting EDS — from initial setup to scaling across projects.
Getting your team started

2. Request access
Designers need Figma licences (through AccessIT). Developers need the npm packages (public, no licence required). Citizen developers need their standard Microsoft 365 access.
3. Start with a new project
Adopt EDS on a new project rather than migrating an existing one. This lets the team learn the components without the pressure of a running system. Once the team is comfortable, you can plan migration for existing projects.
Scaling adoption
You don't need to adopt everything at once. A practical approach:
- Pick a pilot project — one new project where the team uses EDS from day one
- Replace components incrementally — when you touch existing code, swap custom components for EDS equivalents
- Add EDS checks to reviews — include EDS usage as a review criterion in design and code reviews
- Track what matters — accessibility compliance, component reuse rate, and design consistency are useful signals
Common questions & challenges
What if we already have our own components?
You don't need to replace everything. Use EDS for new work and evaluate migration for existing components based on maintenance cost vs. benefit.
What if we need something EDS doesn't cover?
Document the deviation, flag it for review, and consider proposing it as a new EDS component if other teams share the same need.
How long does it take to get up to speed?
Expect the team to be slower during the first few weeks while learning the component APIs and token system. This is normal and recovers quickly.
What does EDS cost?
The npm packages are open source. Figma licences are managed through Equinor's existing agreements. Training and support from the EDS team are provided at no additional cost.
Do we need to migrate existing projects?
No. New projects should use EDS from the start. Existing projects can migrate gradually — or not at all, if the cost doesn't justify it.
How do we get training?
Contact the EDS team to schedule role-specific workshops. There are also regular office hours and Slack channels for ongoing questions.
